In the late 1980s, the national television network was used as a tool for cultural homogenization and for the electoral benefits through creation of an Indian national character closely identified with the majoritarian prejudices of the ruling political party. The grand epics on the national television network were the result of close connection between increasing number of middle class, commercial advertising and the use of television network for electoral purposes.
