The Tigress of Achankmar and other Jungle Tales

The idea to write about wildlife encounters dates back to my decade-long tenure at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. A place called Achanakmar was my favorite. I loved visiting it whenever I could, often staying overnight at Achanakmar and Lamni forest rest houses. Stopping at Maiku Math, on the roadside just before the village of Bindawal, and reading the inscription was a must. I don?t remember how many times I read that inscription. It was enthralling each time, holding me spellbound and sparking a deep desire to learn more about the incident. Information trickled, in bits and pieces, from local sources. The tea vendor who used to keep his tiny tea shack at the left corner of the Achanakmar entry, the caretakers at the rest houses, and the people I interviewed at Bindawal, Chaparwa and Telai Dabra villages. Before their narratives were brushed away by time and forgotten, I jotted them down, hoping to bring them back to life someday.
